“There is a difference between just buying a house, and building one. When you buy you are living in someone else’s home, whether it was someone’s dream home or a contract build, it is someone else’s vision. When you build a house with your own hands, it is yours.” -Dr. James Briggs
In north Covington there is an almost mythical house. The aptly names North House is the decade-spanning project and brain child of David Bourgeois and Dr. James Briggs.
Born and raised with seven siblings in Baton Rouge, James Briggs originally attended school with goals to become a General Surgeon. Till one day while riding in the passenger seat of his teacher’s Jaguar, the older man convinced him to instead pursue Dentistry. Fast forward a few years later, he graduated LSU School of Dentistry with a license to practice. At the same time, the young Doctor shared an apartment on St. Charles Ave. with David Bourgeois, an aspiring artist and lifelong friend. After living in several houses over the years, city life grew too claustrophobic for the two who decided that the best solution was to reconnect with nature as well as their respective crafts.
